Hot and not so hot

Hot

Thanks to Auckland Haematologist Rae Varcoe, Te Araroa appeared in the latest issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Australia got their own synchrotron. What it does is beyond me but anything that's the size of a football field is fascinating enough.

Must try Yotel out when I next visit Heathrow or Gatwick.. looks comfy

ABCD and essence of Medicine

Not so hot

"
According to KPMG demographer Bernard Salt, these days a 32-year-old woman in Australia has about as much chance of finding a partner her age as a woman who is 82-years-old."

Wrong diagnosis: Ali had hypothyroid?!

Helen Clark saying child abuse is a "community wide" problem.. clearly.. Maori aren't the winners here.

Finally!

Finally, got my FTP site from ihug sorted, well, the helpdesk people from ihug wasn't that useful, my old site is still stuff.

To celebrate my FTP up and running again, here are some useful JAMA patient info pages. The last one is a bit bizarre!

AF, Transfusion, Metabolic Syndrome, Getting Fit and Fitness, Retinopathy, Men and Women are different!

Winehot

Winehot is one of the few civilised joints where you get nibbles with whatever you ordered.

Owner Julian said he didn't get the the best Bar at the Bar awards tonight. Well, who needs a prize when the place is almost full inside late on a Tuesday night?

when humanity counts

The median age of patients in Auckland City Hospital's General Medical and Older People's Health wards is around 85. Most junior doctors are in their 20s and 30s.

What an experience must it be, when the older folks have the misfortune of ending up in the hospital.

Memory for MMSE, by this London med student captures the most awkward moments of these encounters beautifully.

Brick Bay Sculpture Trail

"The Glass House" at Brick Bay Sculpture Trail is a wonderful piece of architecture. Forget about sculptures, the building itself is worth a visit already.

a messy and complicated issue

Men do read women magazines. In the gym, waiting rooms and, whilst waiting to have a hair cut.

How refreshing it is, to read the following by the editor of Madison in April 07 edition from across the ditch

"as a working mum with two kids, I am convinced that all modern women are victims of the have-it-all philosophy. A feminist ideal suggested that you could successfully have a career, a relationship and children all at the same time. Nobody, it seems, bothered to fast forward to the impact this kind of grandiose plan would have on women. Perhaps in the fight for choice a few key issues were overlooked? And now here we are, the working mothers are worn out and the childless women are over it. Something has got to give"

John Paling

From zoology at Oxford to getting Emmys for his wildlife productions, John Paling seems like an interesting character. His Paling Perspective Scale is a novel way of communicating risk. Put it simply, there's risk associated with going to your local supermarket!

Happiness

My camera captures happy moments. Let's hope I'm good enough to carry my camera to the upper mountains soon.

Amazing Grace

According to the movie's official website, there are currently 972 arrangements of "Amazing Grace". Amazing.

I must admit my ignorance in that I haven't even heard of William Wilberforce before coming across this movie.

Three other new discoveries..

A blog, podcast and even a youtube clip from st-mathew-in-the-city's vicar. I found this piece particularly refreshing, especially coming from a clergy.

There're 1940 used and new copies of the New York Time's best seller - "The purpose driven life" for sale on amazon. (thanks Anton for your brand new copy). With fame comes criticisms. David Gregory's "dinner with a perfect stranger" and "a day with a perfect stranger" are probably a bit more readable - the latter I started after boarding a plane in Sydney, and finished before I walked into Auckland's terminal.

The movie Transformers brings Sci-fi film to another level.

neighborhood restaurant

Auckland is full of fine neighborhood restaurants: Engine Room in Northcote, Maple Room in Remuera, Fish in Epsom to name a few. Point in Point Chevlier, unfortunately, doesn't quite make the list.

It used to be Point 9-5 a couple of years ago; staffed by a husband and wife team, much like The French Cafe, ensures top notch food and service.

Fast forward to 2007. Their website proclaims "we use the freshest possible produce to offer our diners an unpretentious selection of New Zealand culinary fare"

Well, after yesterday's visit, our impression is that if their food is at all representative of the state of New Zealand culinary fare, we should all stay home and learn how to cook for ourselves.

Finding Johanneshof Gewurztraminer on the wine list was, I'm afraid, the only positive highlight of our visit.
